Agnes (Broek) Hiller went to be with her beloved Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, on Sunday July 17th after a short stay at the Beausejour Hospital, a few weeks short of her 89th birthday.
“My Blondie” is deeply missed by her doting, loving husband Edward Hiller of almost 66 years of marriage, by her loving 5 children and children-in-love Christel & Leonard Mueller, Wally & Maureen Hiller, Martin & Pam Hiller, Allan & Charlene Hiller, and Monika & Yesupadam Paidipamula, and by her 54 adoring grandchildren of “Oma” and great-grandchildren of “Great-Oma”.
Agnes Hiller is survived by her elder sister Bernadine Mueller and her sister-in-law, Gisela Broek, along with numerous nieces and nephews and their families. She is predeceased by her parents Johann and Magaretha Broek, daughter Wanda in infancy, her 3 brothers John, Okko, Hermann and her 4 sisters Gretchen, Grietje, Hermine and Jannette.
Agnes Broek was born in Germany on August 14th, 1933 as the youngest of 9 children to Johan Broek and Margaret Koester. The entire family made their way to Canada over the years thereafter, except for two of her sisters who passed away in Germany. Agnes arrived in Manitoba in August 1955, celebrating her 21st birthday on the ship, and by divine intervention met her future mother-in-law Hulda Hiller on route. The families reconnected later that year and she met the dapper young man Edward Hiller…they fell in love, were engaged on New Year’s Eve, and were married on July 21st, 1956. After a few years of working odd jobs, Edward and Agnes finally settled their growing family on a dairy farm 1 mile east of Whitemouth, where they lived for almost 30 years teaching their family a strong work ethic.
For the next 6 years before retirement, Agnes and Edward were the caretakers of Mission Baptist apartments in Winnipeg where they lovingly served the elderly, always going the extra mile to help those in need. After retiring in 1996, they moved to William Ave. West in Winnipeg and lived there happily while enjoying visits from their children, grand-children and ever growing amount of great-grandchildren who were the delight of their lives. They even made trips to Croatia and India to visit 2 of their children, missionaries in those nations.
In 2016, Agnes and Edward moved to Stony Plains Terrace apartments in Beausejour and enjoyed the years together closer to family, until Agnes went to her Heavenly Home on July 17th, 2022. Edward’s fondest memories of their time there were reading the Bible after breakfast each morning, and holding hands and praying together throughout the day. They were inseparable and although there were a number of hospital stints over the years, they were always side by side through thick and thin.
As their children, we are beyond grateful that our parents showed us their undying love and commitment to each other and to God, and that our Mom left a wonderful legacy of love and prayer to be passed down to each generation to come. We will always remember Mom as a powerful prayer warrior, and a hard-working, elegant woman devoted to Jesus and her family. Mom always kept her bright beautiful smile and shining countenance throughout the ups and downs of life. She is fondly remembered by family and friends for her warm welcoming hospitality, for her delicious Sunday dinners with guests around the table, for her servant heart to care for others, and for her beaming smile no matter how much pain she was in.
MOM, OMA, GREAT-OMA…WE DON’T KNOW HOW WE WILL LIVE WITHOUT YOU, BUT WE ARE THANKFUL YOU ARE PAIN FREE AND EXPERIENCING NEVER ENDING PEACE AND JOY IN HEAVEN.
A celebration of the life of Agnes Hiller will be held at 11:00 a.m. on August 6th at Elim Baptist Church, 645 James Ave, Beausejour, MB R0E 0C0. Lunch will be immediately after the service in the church basement, and interment to follow at Whitemouth Fellowship Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to Elim Baptist Church Missions.
Our family would like to thank the loving staff and home care attendants at Stony Plains Terrace for their care and compassion over the 6 years of Mom and Dad’s residency there. We also thank the Beausejour Hospital doctor and staff who cared for Mom during her short stay and passing, as her beloved husband held her hand and her loving family surrounded her. God bless all of you.
