January 30, 1928 ~ March 8, 2011
It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Arvid on Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at the age of 83.
Remaining to forever cherish Arvid’s memory is Margot, his wife of 35 years, his three brothers and their families, Alex and Esther (Allan, Sharon and James), Harold and Marlene (Sheila and Melvin), Gary and Barb (Steven and Stuart) and nephews Glenn and Terry Hastman, sisters in-law and families, Helen Muehe (Michael), Else Rosenblatt (Dieter and Inge) and all of the nephews and nieces families.
Arvid was predeceased by his parents Ferdinand and Rita Rattai, sister Beatrice Hastman, brothers in-law Gordon Hastman, Heinz Muehe and Egon Rosenblatt.
Arvid was born in Tyndall, MB on January 30, 1928. Tyndall is where he attended school. In his teens, the family moved to Green Bay where they farmed. After his parents retired, Arvid took over the farm. Together with his brother Alex, they farmed for nearly 50 years. The family farm is carried on by his nephews Allan and James.
Arvid and Margot married on July 25, 1975. They both loved and enjoyed their farming years together. Arvid and Margot retired in 1994 and moved to Beausejour where they enjoyed retirement life together. Over the years they enjoyed many trips to various places including Europe. Arvid loved animals and nature. He fed the birds every day.
Arvid’s interests also included his love for music. At a very young age he started playing in bands. Some of them included Green Valley Boys, BJ5, Country Drifters and Howards Barn Boys. Arvid loved playing the banjo, violin and mouth organ. Many great parties were shared with friends and family including barn dances, etc. Arvid’s basement parties with his family have created the greatest memories that will remain in their hearts forever.
Arvid’s last few year of his life were lived at the East Gate Lodge Personal Care Home in Beausejour. Thank you to Dr. Van Rensburg and the staff in the Rose and Shamrock Units for all their care and compassion.
Arvid will be fondly remembered by Margot and his family for his music, laughter, humour and the love he brought to all of our lives.
A private family service is being held.
In lieu of flowers, if friends and family so desire, donations in Arvid’s memory may be made to the Brokenhead River Community Foundation, Box 2225, Beausejour, MB R0E 0C0.
