B.H. (John) Small

1940 ~ 2015

With broken hearts, our family announces the sudden passing of John Small, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle.

John leaves behind his wife and love of over 52 years, Augusta (Gus), daughter Darlene (Julian) and four grandchildren Lindsay, Shayne, Alanna and Alexa and special nephew Ken (Shauna) Small.  He also leaves behind his sisters Marian (Clifford) Charlesworth, Arlene Kines and brother Arnold Small.  John was predeceased by his parents Henry and Martha Small and son Lloyd Small.

John was born and grew up in the R.M. of Brokenhead.  Farming and animals were always a passion in John’s life.  In the early years from helping to support the life of a dairy farm to cutting lumber in the bush camps, hard work was the norm, as well as raising a family.  A decision was made to change careers and Alberta bound was the decision and trucking was the chosen career.  O/O between 1971-1978, first moving to Calgary then Edmonton.  In the fall of 1978 the family moved back to their Manitoba roots.  His career at CN was as a Carman until retirement in 2003.  Years after retirement were spent travelling with the grandkids.  Many summers to the U.S. and BC, local campgrounds, are all special memories had by all.  In the meantime, he was always proud to have kept up his class 1 license and able to drive whenever he could.

He was always there to support his grandkids – from 4H, School Christmas Concerts, 17 years of Ukrainian Dance Concerts, horse shows or whatever, he would always be there.  Small town country fairs and getting together at community events was always a joy.  Travelling/camping was a passion.  On their 25^th year of marriage they took a road trip to Alaska.  Road trips were a joy, including a road trip to Florida and cruise to the Bahamas.

Leather, woodworking and crafts were another retirement pastime, as well as gardening. His famous local “John’s” garlic which is so often sought after.

A Memorial Service took place on Friday, April 10 at 11:00 a.m. at Sobering Funeral Chapel, 1035 Park Avenue E., Beausejour.
