Peacefully on April 5, 2025, our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt, Carol Ann Ans passed away at her home at the age of 83.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Roberta (Grant), Roger (Laurie), Ken (Linda), Barbara, and Chris (Jacquie); her brother Richard McCalder (Janet), sister-in-law Terry McCalder, and brother-in-law Howard Ans (Lorraine); 10 grandchildren, 13 great-children; her faithful cat Susie; nephews, nieces, cousins, and numerous friends.
Carol was predeceased by her husband Robert (Bobby), parents William (Bill) and Eva McCalder, sister Sandra More, brother David McCalder, and daughter Debra.
Carol was born in Elma, MB on January 31, 1942. For the first three and a half years of her life, she never met her father as he was fighting overseas in WW2. Carol was raised on the family farm and received her education at Elma School.
On April 4, 1959, she married Robert (Bobby). They eventually settled on the Ans family farm on Scott’s Hill Rd in the Whitemouth area. Here they raised their six children. Bobby was a farmer and a carpenter, and Carol was a home-maker but often worked part time jobs to make ends meet.
When Bobby passed away in 1995, Carol moved in to the town of Whitemouth. When her health started to decline, she moved back to Elma to live with her daughter and son-in-law. In 2021, she moved to Beausejour to live in South Haven Manor.
Carol was an industrious, hardworking, independent individual who always made do with what she had. Through life’s hardships, she always maintained her faith. Her resilience was demonstrated when she lost her sister, husband, and father all within an eight month period.
She wore many hats over the years; homemaker, store clerk, bookkeeper, store owner, school bus driver, home care aide, and newspaper correspondent for the Clipper. She said her favourite jobs were working for the McDougald’s at the hardware store, driving the school bus, and writing for the Clipper in Beausejour. Her articles were read far and wide and she captivated her readers with her down-to-earth, homey, unpretentiousness. She kept us informed of local events as well as the happenings in the world around us.
Carol loved singing and listening to music, especially live concerts. She was an avid reader, her home always filled with books. She was also an excellent writer, filling notebooks with poetry in her younger years and keeping folks entertained with her newspaper column in her later years. A great lover of history, you could find her telling Christmas stories, especially about the war, at our local community centre, or sitting for hours with one of her kids, relaying family history.
Anyone that knew her also knew how much she loved bingo, trips to the casino with friends, or knitting beautiful treasures for family and friends.
Carol’s generous and caring nature blessed her with many lifelong friends. The family would like to thank all of the family and friends that have been a support to mom over the years.
Her wishes were to be cremated and laid to rest with Bobby. She did not desire a funeral service, just a celebration in her honour.
The family would like to invite everyone to a Celebration of Carol’s life on Saturday April 26, 2025, at 11 a.m. at the Whitemouth Recreation Centre, 61 First Street, Whitemouth Mb.
Carol’s ashes will be interred in the columbarium at the Whitemouth Municipal Cemetery at 10 a.m. before the celebration. Everyone is welcome to attend.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Whitemouth Seniors Happy Hour Club.
