Curtis Wold

We are saddened to announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, uncle, grand-father, and great-grandfather, at age 84. On February 17, 2023 at 3 pm on the dot (which, just like him, always to the minute), our Curty passed away with family by his side. He leaves to mourn his wife Linda of 44 years, daughters Rhonda (Steven), Dawna (James) and Ashley (Jamal), and sons Lyle and Todd. He also leaves behind 4 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and siblings.

Curtis was born in Beresford Lake, Manitoba, and grew up in Lac du Bonnet. He spent many years living and loving the Winnipeg River (not “lake” as Curty would correct), and small town life in Manitoba. He moved to BC as a young man, where he worked several jobs eventually landing at Kenworth. He then met the love of his life Linda and they moved back home to Manitoba, where Curtis secured a job with AECL. A jack of all trades, Curtis was a hard worker and had numerous jobs to support the new life he was building with Linda. Much to both of their surprise, in 1983, Ashley was born.

To be closer to his other children, the three of them picked up and moved to BC. While there, Curtis’ kidneys failed; he started dialysis and was placed on the transplant list. He received a kidney 2.5 years later which we realize now gave us 27 extra years. In 1997, they decided to move back “home”.

He was able to work as a security guard at Tanco Tantalum Mine. Upon retiring he could enjoy his favourite hobbies. He and Linda traveled to all the hot destinations with friends and family, going on cruises and watching the ladies in bikinis. He loved the Winnipeg Jets and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He loved eating peanuts and cashews, snowmobiling and ice fishing in his shack, and “holding down the couch”. He loved watching wrestling and boxing, listening to music, and dancing, going out on the boat and playing darts at the legion…making everyone listen to his jokes.

Their river-side property was his pride and joy, and if any blade of grass was out of place, or snowflake was on the driveway, he couldn’t rest. But most of all, he loved and adored Linda and enjoyed telling the story of how they ruined a whole batch of pickles (sure Curty, blame the music but we know it was too many rum and cokes).

In July of 2018, the difficult decision to sell the house on the river was finalized. Not wanting to leave LdB, Linda and Curtis moved into town into a one-level condo, to help Curtis get around easier. Multiple health issues started piling up for Curtis in 2019. The last few years have been a struggle for him, but he still always made us laugh and smile. Even though his body was failing, his sense of humour remained intact and that is what will be missed the most. Curty’s heart never left Manitoba, but a piece of Manitoba left us. Everyone has the Gold Standard, but thanks to you, we have the “Wold Standard”. Goodbye old Viking, you will be missed.

The family would like to thank EMS, Dr. Bruneau, Dr. Papetti, Dr. Rush, and the staff at Pinawa Hospital. We would also like to thank the numerous medical professionals that were there for Curtis over the years. At Curtis’ request there will be no funeral service. There will be a small graveside gathering in the Spring with family.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Kidney Foundation of Canada – Manitoba Branch, which helped us get many more years with our Curty.
