David George Warriner

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of David (Dave) George Warriner, 83, on August 16, 2024 after a lengthy battle with Dementia. Dave is survived by his wife of 46 years Margaret (Hodgson), daughter Angelique (Ken), Grandchildren Travis (Laura), Clay. Rikki Lynn, three Great Grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews/great nieces and nephews/great great nieces and nephews. Dave was pre-deceased by his son David, parents Catherine and Cecil, brother Rick and sister Illa.

Dave  left home at an early age to begin working and had a number of jobs which helped shape his career including working in a gold mine in Red Lake, Ontario. After working in various communities across Canada he chose to settle in Winnipeg where he obtained his A License in gas and oil installation. Dave worked for many years in this field and eventually began working for the Manitoba Government in the Department of Labour and remained there for 22 years.

Dave met and married his wife Margaret in 1978 and they bought ten acres of land in the Cook's Creek area. They built their home and worked on developing two acres of the property into their own personal oasis with many hours spent planting thousands of trees, and creating numerous flower and vegetable gardens. Dave and Margaret also welcomed many wandering stray cats into their lives where they found a loving home and two people to care for them. Dave was very proud of the "little piece of heaven" they had worked together on building.

Dave enjoyed participating in many physical activities including swimming, scuba diving, fishing, dancing, golfing and hunting. It was during one of his many hunting trips that he was able to reconnect with his cousins in Eddystone where they had many discussions over the correct spelling of their last name and whether it was "Warriner" or "Warrener".

In Dave's retirement years he built a woodworking shop on their property and this became one of his passions as he worked on a variety of different projects. One of his greatest accomplishments was completing the curio Grandfather clock which is still proudly displayed in their livingroom.

Another one of Dave's passions was engaging in a game of crib and he would spend a few hours playing every evening, at times even well past dark using head lamps.

Dave fought a brave battle with Dementia and in remembering him we will focus on the happy times, the love, and the laughter which was shared. Thank you to both the staff on A4 at the Selkirk Mental Health Centre as well as the Beausjour East Gate Lodge where Dave was treated with dignity and respect and treated like family during his final years. Margaret would also like to thank family, friends and neighbours for their support during this difficult time.

There will be no formal service as per Dave's wishes, and in lieu of flowers donations may be directed to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst way, Winnipeg, R3T 0R3.
