1931 ~ 2011
It is with broken hearts we mourn the sudden loss of Derek George Boase, aged 79 years on December 8, 2011, at his home in Pinawa.
Derek will be sadly missed by his loving wife Thelma of 57 years, his devoted daughter Carol (Alain) and his compassionate son Philip, his two beloved grandchildren Jacinthe and Miquel. He also leaves to mourn his sister Brenda (Jack) and family in England as well as close friends in Pinawa.
Derek was born in the lovely Lake District in England. As a young man he was a long distance runner and at a very early age music became a big part of his life. At the age of 12 he was the organist at his church. Derek attended the University of Durham and after completing his BSc in chemistry he began work at Windscale, the Atomic Energy Plant where he worked for thirteen years on the development of nuclear reactors for electrical power. In 1966, he and his family immigrated to Canada where Derek worked as a research scientist for the Atomic Energy of Canada in Pinawa, developing new sources of nuclear energy. During his years at AECL his scientific work created opportunities to travel to many different countries.
During his leisure times he enjoyed outdoor life at the cottage, duck hunting with his son, Philip, and shared the love of water and boating with his daughter Carol. Family vacations were an important part of his life. Derek also enjoyed many days playing hide and seek with his grandchildren at the cottage. He retired on his 55th birthday and devoted his life to his passion, music. He was the organist and choir director for the Pinawa Christian Fellowship for many years. His failing health forced him to retire from the choir which was heartbreaking for him. Recently he enjoyed a trip to England enabling him to take a walk down memory lane where he connected with family and friends.
A Memorial Service was held at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 13th, 2011, at the F. W. Gilbert School, Pinawa, with Rev. Robert Murray officiating.
In lieu of flowers, if friends and family so desire, donations in his memory may be made to the Pinawa Hospital or the Pinawa Chistian Fellowship.
