With tearful hearts, we announce the passing of Donald Walker MacLellan, lovingly known as Donnie "Red Lewis”, on September 10, 2024 at the age of 76, in Pine falls, Manitoba. Donnie was a cherished son, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. Born and raised in Dunvegan, Cape Breton, Donnie moved away, but his heart always belonged to his Cape Breton roots. A man of hard work, quick wit, and a zest for life, Donnie left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Donnie's greatest pride was his family. He had a deep love for his four children: Debra, Jennifer (Aaron), Lewis (Chantelle), and Marion (Jamieson), from his marriage to Janette. He adored and spoke about his children with immense pride. He was also a proud grandfather who cherished every update about his grandchildren's adventures and accomplishments, which brought him endless joy. His grandchildren: Marisa, Brooke, Breagha, Julia, Nathan, Reid, Alex, and Cal, were the light of his life.
Donnie made it a point to stay close to his siblings; always keeping in touch through his daily phone calls, ensuring that the family bond remained strong. His siblings: Anita, Judy (Henry), Mary Lou (Leo), and Gerard (Rose), were always close to his heart, as were his many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Marion and Lewis, his sister Freda, and his brother-in-law Alistair.
In Manitoba, Donnie built a life with his partner Darlene, and her children Wayne, Charlene, Vince, and Michelle, creating many cherished memories together. Donnie’s love and connection extended to Darlene’s grandchildren: Jaron, Janessa, Cameron, Daniel, Madison, and Katelyn, as well as her great-grandchild Lilly, who all held a special place in his heart. After Darlene's passing, Donnie was deeply comforted by Darlene’s children, who helped fill the void left in his heart. He was blessed to have a large circle of friends who provided companionship and support throughout his illness.
Donnie spent most of his life with his boots firmly planted on the ground, whether working as an ironworker or deep in the mines. Known in the mining community for his strong work ethic and his sense of humor, he forged many lifelong friendships that extended well beyond the worksite. He remained close with his childhood friend Stanley throughout his life, with daily conversations about the Cape Breton news. A true people person, Donnie made friends wherever he went. He was always up for a chat, or willing to lend a helping hand.
Donnie was instantly recognizable with his classic Elvis hair, which matched his charming and unforgettable personality. His laugh could fill a room, and he was known for his notorious repertoire of dirty jokes and one liners. He cherished the simple pleasures in life: a good conversation, a hearty laugh, and a competitive game of crib.
Donnie "Red Lewis” leaves behind a legacy of laughter, love, and unforgettable memories. His family, friends, and all who knew him, will forever carry a piece of his spirit with them. Though he may be gone, his stories, his laughter, and his love will live on.
Rest easy, Donnie. Keep those zipper boots ready for the next adventure, and may you find peace. You will be missed more than words can say.
