Edmund Schewe

June 17, 1929 — October 22, 2022

June 17, 1929 – October 22, 2022

Edmund (Eddy) passed away the morning of October 22, 2022.  He will be sadly missed by his wife of 32 years, Winnifred (née Strong), his daughters Anita Drabyk, Susan (Bruce) Patterson, Barb (Craig) Darroch, and son Andrew (Cathy).  He will be remembered by his grandchildren, Stacy (Jeremy), Sydney, Melissa, Tyler, Lian, Emma, and Halle and by Winnifred’s children Joanne (Wayne) Sieg and Grant (Cheryl) Kukurudz, and grandchildren Laudon, Cohen, Mackenzie and Stella. He is also survived by his brother Norman (Lorraine) and sister Esther (Bill), and many nieces and nephews.

Eddy was predeceased by his first wife Mary (née Ulman), his son-in-law Ron Drabyk, Winnifred’s grandchild Bronson Sieg, his parents, brothers (Rudolph, Adolph, Herman, and Arnold), sisters (Olga, Elsie, Sophie and Velma).

Eddy was the ninth child of Gustav and Justina (nee Rattai) Schewe and lived most of his life within one mile of his birthplace, Green Bay, Manitoba.  Eddy spent a lot of time with his younger siblings (Velma, Norman and Esther).  Through the years Eddy and Norman spent many hours together, finally landing at East Gate Lodge in Beausejour where they both resided. He was a farmer for most of his life with a brief stint working in bush camps in his early years. He and his wife Mary married in 1954 and started a mixed farm and raised their four children there. He was proud of all his children’s and grandchildren’s accomplishments.  Eddy considered travelling and holidays as a time for visiting family and friends. As with most farmers, he did not retire until much later in life. Eddy married Winnifred in 1990. They lived near the farm on Schewe Road until they moved to Beausejour.

Edmund loved the outdoors, farming, fishing, hunting, vegetable gardening, singing, birdwatching, feeding the birds, playing cards and, most importantly, being a part of his church community.

Although farming fully occupied his life, he managed to take time out to make memories with his family; he took the kids out of school to go fishing, went on drives to look for wildlife and visited relatives near and far.  He also enjoyed singing in the church choirs and playing the harmonica. St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Green Bay and Zion Lutheran Church in Beausejour were integral parts of his life.

Thank you to the staff at East Gate Lodge Personal Care Home for their compassionate care of Edmund.

Memorial donations may be made to the Zion Lutheran Church, Beausejour.

A celebration of Eddy’s life will be held October 31, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. at Sobering Funeral Chapel, 1035 Park Ave., E., Beausejour, MB, followed by interment at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Beausejour.  Reception to follow at the Beausejour Room of the Brokenhead River Community Hall.
