Elmer Earl Meade

September 13, 1941 to August 28, 2023

Sadly, Elmer lost his battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis.  He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Agnes (Barenz), daughters Cheryl ( Barry ), Cathy (Dave), grandsons Michael (Lisa), Chace and Cort, great granddaughter Oaklynn.

Elmer was born and grew up in Manigotagan in a large family.  He learned early in life how to survive fishing and hunting and was known to have the “occasional” fist fight with his 8 older brothers.

He married Agnes at the age of 20 when he began his almost 40 year career as an underground miner.  Mining took him to a number of places including Ontario, NWT, British Columbia, settling in Lac du Bonnet.

Elmer was well known in the community of Lac du Bonnet where he was involved in numerous community activities.  He spent countless hours at the arena coaching minor hockey, playing hockey, organizing Metis tournaments, and helping to get ringette started, or just hanging out watching all the games cheering the boys on.

After his retirement he still got up at the crack of dawn to sip a coffee at Woody’s with his “equally as deaf” mining buddies and share stories, most of which may not have been based on facts.

Family was everything to Elmer, his door was always open whether it was the Meade homestead in Manigotagan or home in Lac du Bonnet.  Many hours were spent at the water where “Uncle Elmer” loved to let all the kids drive the boat.  Water skiing, swimming, canoeing, and fishing.

He was also active in curling and bowling, if he wasn’t playing he was cheering others on or telling them how to do it.

He also loved to partake in all of the sports that his grandsons were in.  Whether it was taking Michael to hockey, or Chace and Cort rugby and football, he was always cheering them on and giving them advice on how to win.

Elmers past few months were brightened when his first great grandchild was born in May.  She lightened up his days, family was everything to him.

There will be no funeral as per his “in no uncertain terms” wishes.  What Elmer would want is for you to go have a coffee with family, friends or neighbours.
