It is with sadness we announce the passing of Elvy Foubert who passed away on April 11, 2025 at the age of 103 at the Lac du Bonnet Personal Care Home.
Predeceased by beloved husband Raymond, mother Emma Christina and father Karl Oscar Anderson; sisters, Mildred and Violet, along with brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Survived by son Randall (Marie); daughter Alison (Bob); four grandchildren, Vincent (Jaimie), Roger (Brandie), Curtis and Renee; also survived by great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mom was born in Winnipeg on December 2, 1921, and moved to Old St, Vital in her early childhood years where she remained until your adulthood. In 1944 at a dance in Clear Lake she met Air Force man, Raymond Foubert and after a brief whirlwind romance, they married on June 30, 1944 and remained married for 62 years. After a brief stay in New Westminster till end of war they moved back to St. Vital where they built their first home in the late 1940’s.
In January 1955, Mom and family moved to Lac du Bonnet, which except for a brief stint in Birds Hill Park, became home for the next 70 years. Another new house was built on Park Avenue in Lac du Bonnet. In the 50’s and 60’s dances were popular and plentiful. Often post dance parties would be held in their basement, sometimes attended by Police who came not to close the party, but to join it.
In her single years, Elvy worked at a photography studio in Winnipeg. After marriage, she was a housewife although several boarders from all walks of life stayed at the Park Avenue home. After a brief move to Bird’s Hill Park in the 70’s, another new home was built on the shores of the beautiful Winnipeg River, just south of Lac du Bonnet where Mom stayed until she was 96 years old. Elvy’s interests included art and crafts, sewing and knitting, cooking, baking (specialty Swedish hard bread and bacon buns), entertaining, active in fishing, curling, dancing and gardening. She enjoyed reading, especially current events and was a Free Press subscriber for almost 70 years. For many years an active bridge player and in her senior years cribbage daily until failing vision made it unable to play. She also enjoyed watching the Blue Bombers and any curling event on TV. In recent years, she was active with Trippers and floor curling at the Pioneer Club. Visits from the grandchildren were much appreciated and they were rewarded with bacon buns, delicious meals and many other treats.
Elvy was a feisty, determined person. After Ray’s illness, she obtained a driver’s license in her 60’s after never driving alone with taking over all house management duties. Even into her 90’s, she refused homecare unless absolutely necessary, preferring to do everything on her own. She never did forgive the eye Dr. who suspended her driver’s license even though she was legally blind, nor the customs officer who seized her mickey of rum at the Calgary Airport.
Travel was a large part of her life, especially after Dad retired. They motored across Canada, Coast to Coast, toured most of the USA including Alaska. She made a couple of tripes to her parent’s homeland Sweden, toured most of Europe, along with tropical destinations, Dominican Republic, Mexico and Hawaii. In addition, several trips were made near and far to watch Briers and Silver Brooms. Some of Elvy’s happiest times were spent in their sunroom during the summer months, entertaining family or friends viewing activities on the river and sipping on a rum. Happy hours were a part of Mom’s life into her 100’s.
Our family would like to thank all the staff at the Lac du Bonnet Personal Care Home for their care and kindness to Mom in the past few years and to Dr. Bruneau for keeping her as comfortable as possible. We know that at times she was not the most patient of patients.
Recently, Mom said, “I’ve had a good life, a fine hard-working husband, a good family and friends, good times and above all good health.” In over 100 years, other than childbirth, she probably spent less than two weeks in hospital for medical reasons.
A long life well lived. Rest in Peace with Raymond.
