Henry Wojciechowski

March 28, 1926 — March 28, 2014

1926 – 2014

Henry passed away peacefully during the early hours on October 7, 2014 at Pinawa Hospital.

Henry was predeceased by his mother Helena and father Dominik, sisters and brothers Sophie, Josie, Edward, Rudolph, Frances, Balbina, Lewis and David, wife Doris and daughter Lorise. He is survived by his sister Laura, daughter Laverne and several nieces and nephews.

Henry was born in Brightstone Manitoba. He worked in the bush camps maintaining road equipment and clearing roads, removed railroad tracks, worked as a welder, worked for Waters Construction building roads and operating heavy equipment when his talents were noticed by AECL. Henry started working at AECL as a heavy equipment operator, moving up to labour foreman before retirement.   One of his crew’s responsibilities was maintaining the grounds. He was very proud to receive many compliments from foreign visitors on how well kept the site was. He appreciated well-kept lawns and gardens.

In his spare time Henry loved to fish, play saxophone at barn dances, grow giant pumpkins, and help his friends Alex and John on their farms. Henry could fix or build anything and planned several projects to keep himself busy during retirement. He enjoyed decorating the large tree in the yard with over 800 Christmas lights.   He loved to travel with his girls.   He enjoyed fishing for salmon in Alaska and meeting new people on these trips.

Henry always liked to hear a new joke and share it with others. He enjoyed talking to everyone he met and considered them a “good person” if they took the time to listen and converse with him. Henry enjoyed visiting in the local stores and taking drives down the country roads, many which he helped build. Henry loved to watch airplanes land and take off whether they were in front of his house or at a big airport far away.

Even though he grew up without a father, he did a good job raising his daughters. They both attended university, something he couldn’t do. He taught them how to garden, how to tell a joke, pick strawberries and blueberries, catch and smoke fish, weld, and play cribbage. Similarly, he has helped others learn new skills.

Henry led an amazing 88 years of life full of adventure. Thank you to Dr. Papetti, Dr. Bruneau, and all the nurses and staff at Pinawa Hospital for making his first and only stay in hospital comfortable. In lieu of flowers, if you wish, please donate to a charity of your choice in memory of Henry.

A Graveside Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 15 at Red Deer Cemetery.
