Hilda Lindgren (Schacht)

March 28, 1912 — March 28, 2013

1912 ~ 2013

At the age of 101, Hilda peacefully went to meet her Lord and Maker and once again be by her loving husband Axel’s side.  She leaves to cherish her memory her two boys Bruce Arthur (Debra) and Jim Arthur.  She also leaves her three granddaughters, which were the loves of her life, Holly (John), Karen (Gord) and Morgan and her eight great grandchildren Rachelle, Vicky, Peyton, Kenna, Christine, Lina, Maelle and Chase.  She also leaves her youngest brother Irvine and numerous nieces and nephews.

Hilda moved to the Lac du Bonnet area after marrying her husband Axel, settling in the Riverland area.  Hilda told many stories of the hardships she went through before gravel roads and a road across the river and surviving the depression.  Everyone one of these stories were like a fond memory for her, conveying them with much pride.  These experiences are what truly made her the strong woman that she was.  In their early years together, Hilda travelled throughout Manitoba and Saskatchewan with her husband as he built grain elevators.  She was the cook for as many as 20 men at these camps with only a camp stove to cook on.  When at home, she was a house painter and did housekeeping for families in the area.  She was also a foster mom to many young people.  Hilda also loved to be a part of the community.  She worked at polling stations during elections, she did eye testing for young children in school, she belonged to the Centennial Rebekah Lodge in Lac du Bonnet and was instrumental in the planning and building of the Pioneer Club and served as its president for many years.

Hilda was also an avid gardener, although in the early years it was out of necessity.  Every year she planned her vegetable garden and did so until the age of 85 when her health didn’t allow her to anymore.  Hilda was a very proud and strong willed lady.  Her love for family and community were great. She lived a long, hard life but a very fulfilling one.  She always had a story to tell for anyone who would listen.

The family would like to express many thanks to the Lac du Bonnet Personal Care Home staff for the love and care they gave Hilda.  You are true angels.  Also thank you to Dr. Richard Van Gend and Dr. Papetti for their care and compassion.  God Bless each and every one of you.

Cremation has taken place and a Funeral Service was held on Wednesday, March 27, at 11:00 a.m. at the Lutheran Church of the Cross in Lac du Bonnet.  Interment to follow in the summer at Riverland Cemetery.

Donations may be made to the Lac du Bonnet Personal Care Home in Hilda’s memory.
