Irene Potorieko

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved mother, baba, great baba, sister, aunt and friend, Irene Potorieko, who passed away at East Gate Lodge on September 24, 2024, at the age of 83.

She is survived and lovingly remembered by her children Debbie Bryk, Doreen Brown, Cynthia (Bill) Witherspoon, Kimberley (Bert) De bruijn and John Michael Jr. (Tanya) Potorieko.

She also leaves her grandchildren David (Eryn) Kowalchuk, Dana (Ryan) Heroux, Brittany (Steve) Buchak, Stacey (Neil) Regula, Brendan (Sarah) Bryk, Cody (Kassi) Bryk, Shemaine Potorieko, Chloe Potorieko and Dmytro Potorieko. As well she leaves twelve great grandchildren and her siblings Lucy, Vivian, Louie and Darlene.

Irene was predeceased by her parents Louie and Pauline Korchynski; her husband John in 2020; her sons-in-law Richard Bryk and Robert Brown; her brother Ernie as well as her great grandson, David Buchak in infancy.

Irene was born in Rama, Saskatchewan on March 16, 1941. She married her husband John Potorieko on the family farm, in the barn, in 1958. The couple then moved to Winnipeg and raised their family. The made the move to Tyndall later in life and became a part of the community.

Irene and John were very involved in their children and grandchildren’s lives attending all their sporting events. Irene was an avid square dancer. She loved to bowl and curl. She enjoyed her trips to the pool with her grandchildren.

Irene ensured that she passed along all her traditional Ukrainian recipes to her grandchildren.

A come and go viewing will be held on Thursday, October 3, 2024 from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. and a memorial service will be held on Friday, October 4, 2024 at 3:00 p.m. at Sobering Funeral Chapel, 1035 Park Ave. E., Beausejour, MB.

In lieu of flowers a donation may be made in Irene’s memory to the Alzheimer Society, 120 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2
