Jacob (Jake) Sachvie

1922 ~ 2014

On April 25, 2014 Jake Sachvie went home to our Lord’s loving arms at the age of 91, with his faithful family by his side.

Left to cherish his memory are his children: Lorne of Beausejour, Darlene Witzke of Beausejour, and Maureen (Rick) Schindel of Winnipeg.  He will also be dearly missed by his four grandchildren: Kelly (Tracy) Witzke of Montreal; Brady (Jaymi) Witzke  of Beausejour; Daniel Schindel and Adam Schindel both of Winnipeg; and four great grandchildren: Brynn, Nate, Jayke and Finley.   Jake is survived by one brother August, and one sister Alvina Werner.  He will also be missed by nieces, nephews and friends.

Jake was predeceased by his beloved wife of 59 years Tillie (nee Topnik); parents Edward and Maria; his siblings: Mathilda, Bertha, Mary, Ed, Henry, Gottlieb, Linda, and Regina; and son-in-law Ken Witzke.

Jake will always be remembered as a hard working, loving and caring person.  He loved to be surrounded by family and visitors.

Jake was born on August 26, 1922 in Green Bay, Manitoba.  He was raised on the homestead.  As a teenager, he helped his brother Ed fix things, and worked hard on the field.  Later, he went to Steinbach to work in his uncle’s beeswax factory, and in the bush in Ontario.  When at home, he continued to work on the farm.

At the wedding of Henry and Rose Schultz, he met the love of his life Tillie Topnik, and as he said “he never looked back”.  Jake and Tillie married June 15, 1946, and settled in Green Bay, six miles northeast of Beausejour, where they eventually bought his dad’s farm, on the advice of his brother and sisters.

Jake loved to tinker in his workshop, fixing as well as creating items.  His garden was always a treasure and a showcase.  He had a saw mill and cut lumber for many people in the area.  As a young man, he also drilled wells for others.  He loved watching sports, especially baseball, hockey and curling.

Dad had a strong faith; he was often found reading his Bible or devotionals in the old German dialect.  He attended St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Green Bay, where he sang bass in the choir since he was fourteen years old.  He served as a councilman for many years, as well as being the caretaker of the Green Bay Cemetery, which sits on his homestead.

Jake and Tillie worked hard all their lives, and later were able to travel twice a year with bus tours.  Their love for each other has inspired all of us.

The celebration of Jake’s life will be held on Saturday, May 3 at 11:00 a.m. at Sobering Funeral Chapel, 1035 Park Ave. E., Beausejour with viewing at 10:00 a.m., Pastor Mark Koenker will be officiating.  Interment will follow at Green Bay Cemetery.

The family would like to thank the staff at East Gate Lodge Personal Care Home for spending countless hours with dad (especially those angels who made his eyes light up when he saw them).  Also thanks to Dr. Van Rensburg for his special care for Jacob.
