John Ernest Markert

May 28, 1948 — February 5, 2019

May 28, 1948 – February 5, 2019

We are shocked and saddened at the sudden death of our brother.  John passed away at the Pine Falls Hospital on Tuesday, February 5, 2019 after suffering a heart attack.

Left to cherish his memory are his mother Kathleen/Kay, twin sister Ann Quinn, sister Lynn Markert (Stephen), dearly-loved Aunty Rose, cousins and friends.

He was predeceased by his grandparents Ernest and Edith Corder, father John, brother-in-law Michael, aunts, uncles and a cousin.

John grew up in the St. James area of Winnipeg.  He worked in the coin and stamp field until retiring to Silver Falls, Manitoba.   It was there his love of gardening flourished and his yard was a haven for butterflies and hummingbirds.

John had a profound love of nature.  He enjoyed immensely his field trips with friend Peter Taylor to observe butterflies, dragonflies, birds and other wildlife in their natural habitat.  John has many treasured photographs taken during these excursions.

After retiring John discovered his artistic side.  This resulted in numerous works of art using media such as oil painting, wood-working, stone carving, and photography.

In 2016, our mother moved into the Lac du Bonnet Personal Care Home.  John was devoted to Mom and visited her regularly.  He baked her special treats, brought favourite dishes for her lunch, and did what he could to brighten Mom’s day.

John took great pleasure in giving and receiving scratch tickets.  He exchanged many over the years especially with our cousin Edith.  He was delighted when someone had winning tickets.

John had an enduring friendship with Meindert and Tina and family.  He and Meindert enjoyed many cribbage games together.

Our brother was blessed to have wonderful friends and neighbours.  In particular, Robert and family, Travis and family, Dave and Ruth, Kathy and Jeff, Susan and Terry, Grant and their families, all share in our loss.

He always looked forward to lunches and visits with his friends John and Linda.

John loved dogs and had several canine friends throughout his life.  Some of his other interests were antiques, garage sales, and thrift shops.

Kathy, your kindness made that dreadful day more bearable.  We are forever grateful for your loving care of our brother.  Thank you to all the medical personnel who worked so hard to save John.

Cremation has taken place and there will be no service.  Please remember John in your own special way.

If you wish, in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your charity of choice in John’s memory.

There are things we don’t want to happen but have to accept,

things we don’t want to know but have to learn,

and people we can’t live without but have to let go.
