John Mikolaychuk

June 11, 1930 to November 5, 2010

Johnny passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early morning hours of Friday, November 5, 2010 at Pinawa Hospital at the age of 80 years.

He will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 57 years, Margaret (nee Nelson) and his daughter Barb Andrews (Ray St. Hilaire). He was predeceased by his parents Joe in 1969 and Annie in 1988 and his son Gary on October 27, 2008. He is also survived by his sister Mary Olekson (Dan), sisters in-law Lil Spalding and Joan Neimi (Melvin) and various nieces and nephews.

Johnny was born on June 11, 1930 in Ternopil, Ukraine and immigrated to Canada in 1937 with his mother and sister. The family reunited with his father in Pointe du Bois, MB where Dad grew up. Johnny and Margaret married on August 8, 1953 and raised their family in Pointe until ill health forced them to move to Lac du Bonnet in 2004. Dad worked for Winnipeg Hydro as an operator for 34 years until his retirement in 1986.

Dad was a loving father and as a family we enjoyed many fishing trips up the river from Pointe and family holidays to B.C. and Connecticut. Dad took us blueberry picking every year and he loved to pick wild mushrooms and continued to do so until he moved from Pointe. Dad loved to eat and he never lost his appetite until the day before his death.

In his younger days, Dad was always outside, loved to tinker with stuff, was very handy and could fix anything. Dad loved to putter in the yard and fish and hunt. There were never any weeds in the garden and he smoked the best goldeye and sturgeon. Dad enjoyed good times and many steam baths with Don and Melvin. Dad loved to travel and with his wife and best friend Marg, went on many memorable trips, often with Lil and his swagger Don. They travelled to Sweden, China and many hot spots such as Barbados, Jamaica, Hawaii, Cuba, etc.

Special thanks to everyone who came to see Dad in the hospital (he loved the visits) and our deepest appreciation to Dr. Richard Van Gend and the wonderful, caring nurses and health care aids at Pinawa Hospital that took such good care of Dad for the last six months.

As per Johnny’s wishes, no formal service will be held. Donations in his memory can made to the Pinawa Hospital, Box 220, Pinawa, MB R0E 1L0.
