Joseph (Joe) William Tumak

March 28, 1943 — March 28, 2018

1943~2018

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joseph (Joe) William Tumak.  Joe passed away peacefully on March 15, 2018 at the Lac du Bonnet Personal Care Home at the age of 74 years.

He was predeceased by his wife Joyce (Parohl) Tumak in 1986, his younger brother Myron in 1972, as well as his father (Bill) in 1980 and his mother (Anna) in 2013.

Joe is survived by brothers Ben (Delia) Tumak, and Carl Tumak, sisters Lil Cameron, Vicky (Dave) Mowat, Pat (Ron) Duncan and Kathy Day; son Derrick (Cori) Tumak and daughter Sheila Varis, 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Joe was born in Hudson Bay, SK.  He was the oldest of eight children born to Anna (Holowenko) and William (Bill) Tumak.  The family farmed in Hudson Bay, SK and moved to Winnipeg in the early 60’s.  Joe stayed behind to finish his schooling in Hudson Bay, then to Thompson to work for Inco Metals in 1962.  Joe and Joyce were married August 23, 1965.  Daughter Sheila was born in 1965 and son Derrick in 1969.

They lived in Hinton, AB where Joe worked as a pulp cutter and Joyce as a registered nurse at the hospital.  After a few years and a serious leg injury, they returned to Winnipeg.  Joe took on a career in the glass trade for over 20 years.  Joe loved the outdoors during his self-employment in Lac du Bonnet.  He kept busy with hunting, fishing, camping and snowmobiling.  He purchased a “piece of the rock” at Keystone Heights north of Lac du Bonnet.  He got involved with the Lee River Snow Riders Snowmobile Club and groomed trails.  The family have enjoyed these trails for many years.  He established a warm up hut currently referred to as “Joyce’s Cookout” in memory of his late wife.

Family and friends will remember Joe for the unique person he was.  There will never be another Rider Fan like him.

A sincere Thank You to the staff at Pinawa Hospital and caregivers at Lac du Bonnet Personal Care Home for their patience and support.  He is finally at peace.

A Celebration of Joe’s Life will be held on Friday, May 18 at 1:00 p.m. at Legion 164 in Lac du Bonnet, MB, 45 McArthur Avenue.  Internment will follow in Lac du Bonnet Cemetery.
