September 8, 1939 ~ April 22, 2022
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Katherine Jean Hood <née Steiner> on April 22, 2022 in Stonewall, Manitoba.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Orville; son James; daughter Jennifer; son-in-law Rob; and granddaughter Rebecca. She is also lovingly remembered by many friends and family members.
Katherine was predeceased by her parents, Henry and Edith Steiner; her brother Charlie Steiner; her brothers-in-law Henry Malkoske and Bill Shipley; and her sister-in-law Marion Shipley.
The youngest of five children, Katherine grew up on the Steiner family farm in Whitemouth, MB. She moved to Winnipeg in 1956 before meeting her love, Orville, in 1959. Katherine and Orville set up their first home in Whitemouth before moving to Winnipeg in 1962, where they later welcomed James and then Jennifer into the world. Katherine supported Orville throughout their many adventures together travelling through Europe (on five dollars a day), organizing family canoe and camping trips, and running their successful businesses in Swan River and Stonewall.
Throughout her life, Katherine had many hobbies. From baking her chocolate chip cookies and decorating the most creative and original cakes, to knitting and crocheting gifts, to wine making and tending to her famed lily garden, she always kept her hands busy creating something beautiful to share with others. In her later years, Katherine enjoyed sipping wine on the deck with family, friends, and neighbours while watching her cat patrol her backyard and flower gardens.
The loss of Katherine, Mom, Gramma and Kak has left a huge hole in our hearts; to say that she will be missed is a vast understatement. As the matriarch of our small family, she brought us together often to share food, wine, and laughter. No matter what the occasion, she was always upbeat and cheerful, blessing us with her quiet wit. It was hardly a secret how proud she was of her kids, and later her granddaughter.
Everything she did, Katherine did with love and care. Selfless and kind, she will always be remembered for how deeply she loved. She was always giving and providing for others, rarely thinking about herself. Katherine’s devotion to family and friends was as endless as her generosity.
The memorial service will be held at the Redeemer Lutheran Church at 135 Henderson Avenue in Whitemouth, Manitoba on May 21, 2022 at 1pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation.
