Kenneth Arthur Buchholz

April 14, 1949 — July 8, 2014

April 14, 1949 ~ July 8, 2014

After a brave and courageous fight with cancer, Ken died peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones at the St. Boniface Hospital.

He is survived by his life partner, Susan; son Trevor (Shannon); daughter Tracy (Bruce); step-son Tyler (Vickie); step-son Adam (Mira); grandchildren Kassidy, Brayden and Olivia; dear family members Hanni and Dieter; David, Caroline and Nevada, and his wagon side-kick Gypsy.  Ken also leaves to mourn many, many dear and close friends.

He is pre-deceased by his mother, Anne in 1987, and his father, Arthur in 1997.

Ken retired in 2010, after 38 years of employment with the City of Winnipeg, Parks and Open Spaces. He was a well-respected employee and foreman, and made a lot of friends in the work place.  Ken was a founding member of the Broke N Busted Trail Riders, a founding member of the Cluck and Quack Poultry Club, and an active member of the Brokenhead Agricultural Society.

Ken enjoyed many years at the cabin at Terminal Lake, loved busting trail with his horses and going on vacations with the team and covered wagon, snowmobiling, fishing, jigsaw puzzles, and old western movies, were a few of his past times.

Ken has always had a great love of horses that started with Frisky and loved the outdoors.  The greatest highlight of his retirement year was a 6 week wagon trip from our home to Saskatchewan, pioneer style. Some of his other favorite places with the horses were BelAir Provincial Forrest, Spruce Woods Provincial Park, Riding Mountain National Park and Sandilands Provincial Forrest.  It was a trip of a lifetime.  Just last summer we went to Quebec and we were thrilled to be able to go whale watching – fantastic!

Anyone who knew Ken would agree that he was a generous man, open minded, supportive, proud, didn’t mince words, would give you or lend you anything he had – you only had to ask.  He would drop what he was doing if anyone needed his help with anything.  Cutting the grass became his job upon retirement and he took great pride in keeping the lawn neat and tidy.  He had an immense knowledge in a lot of different things and was able to figure out how to fix just about anything (just don’t expect it to look pretty).  Ken had an iron clad memory of places, faces and events from his life.  It was amazing how many people he knew.

Ken has left a huge gap in the lives of all who knew him, but he would not want you to mourn his passing, but to celebrate his life.  Thus, a Celebration of Life in honor of Ken Buchholz will take place at the Community Hall in Beausejour at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 23, 2014.  Let’s do him proud and share stories with one another.

Honorary pallbearers Ken Cowie, Henry Hildebrandt, Ken Hnatiuk, Bill Johnston, John Olfert, Joey Proksz, Henry Thiessen, and Chuck Trefry.

The family would like to thank the following for their care, compassion and dignity shown to Ken and the family during this last journey– Dr. Partyka, the staff at Beausejour Hospital, Dr. Gingerich, Dr. Webb, Trez, Dr. Leppelman, Sharon, the staff on the 4th and 8th floors of St. Boniface Hospital, and all those who pitched in and did what needed (and didn’t need) to be done for Ken and his family.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Palliative Care Unit of the St.Boniface Hospital or to The Children’s Wish Foundation South Interlake Branch.
