Larry Sharbell

September 21, 1959 — July 10, 2024

Paul “Larry” Sharbell

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts we announce the passing of our husband, stepfather, son-in-law and dear friend, Larry Sharbell. With his wife Charlene and stepdaughter Jocelynne by his side, Larry peacefully departed this life on Wednesday, July 10, 2024 at his residence in Beausejour, MB at the age of 64, after a long, hard fought, courageous battle with cancer.

Larry is lovingly remembered by wife Charlene; stepdaughter Jocelynne; sisters, Colleen Sharbell and Linda Sharbell; father-in-law John Kabaluk; constant companion Bentley; as well as numerous relatives and friends. Larry was predeceased by his parents John and Ruby Sharbell; sisters, Marilyn Enman and Christine Smith; brothers, Blake, Dale and Edward; mother-in-law Betty Kabaluk; and dear friend Carol Hay.

Larry was born on September 21, 1959 in Summerside, PEI at the Prince County Hospital. In his early years, when not involved in intramural sports he could be found working at the Sharbell’s Country Store in Portage, PEI. After Graduation, Larry served in the Military for 5 years before being accepted into the RCMP Academy Depot Division in Regina on April 19, 1982.

After graduation from RCMP Depot, Larry’s first posting was in Orillia, Ontario (1982-1983), followed by Toronto (1983-1984), Beausejour (1984-1987), Norway House (1987-1990), Falcon Lake (1990-1992), Iqaluit (1992-1996), Pugwash (1996-1998), Bible Hill (1998-2008), Kimmirut (2008-2010), Kugluktuk (2010-2012), Morris (2012-2014) and Beausejour (2014-2017). Larry’s proudest moment in his RCMP career was when he received his Sergeant Rank in October 2009 while in Kimmirut, NWT. He was extremely proud and honored to be a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and cherished the relationships with his co-workers, staff and members of the communities that he served, making lifelong friendships. One of these friendships started back in 1984 when he was stationed in Beausejour and met Charlene Kabaluk, who he escorted to her high school graduation in 1985. In 1987, following a dream of his to work up North, he accepted a position in Norway House. Throughout his career, his most memorable postings were in the North. Larry was truly an officer and a gentleman. A wonderful friend who impacted many people over the years, retiring with 35 years with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

In 2010, Charlene and Larry reconnected and were married on January 10, 2015. Larry accepted Charlene’s daughter, Jocelynne and took her in as if she was his own. Jocelynne always reminded “Scruffy” that this was a package deal. Anytime the other would do something wrong, they would throw each other under the bus but at the end of the day they were best buds. There was nothing he wouldn’t do for her. He was so proud to watch Jocelynne grow into a beautiful young lady. During the last few years Charlene, Jocelynne and Larry were happy to enjoy traveling, taking vacations to Prince Edward Island, Cuba, Dominican, Mexico and Jamaica to name a few. A good time, tons of laughter and adventures were always to be had. Larry was always happy to visit family down in P.E.I. and had the opportunity to visit in 2023.

Larry enjoyed clam digging in the East Coast, ski-dooing, atv-ing, hunting, golf, listening to old time country music especially Stompin’ Tom Connors (The Hockey Song and Bud the Spud), watching Hockey Night in Canada, getting together with friends and family. One of his favorite things to do was hosting Lobsterfest for friends and family with flying in fresh lobster from PEI and always trying to teach us how to crack them open properly. Larry often enjoyed a fresh bowl of clam chowder and even in his final days was able to make this with Jocelynne. Larry loved spending time with his dog, Bentley and treasured his morning coffee and daily visits uptown.

He was involved with the Knights of Columbus since 2001 and was a 4th Degree Knight. Larry was also a member of the St. Mary Roman Catholic Church.

Our family would like to thank the many doctors and nurses that helped care for Larry during his battle; Dr. Partyka at the Beausejour Hospital, Dr. Brown in the Cancer Care department and all the special people on the Chemo Ward at Selkirk Regional Health Authority. Dr. Wong, Oncologist at St. Boniface. Lastly, we would like to thank nurse Laura Klammer from Palliative Care for all she could do in his last hours and the Interlake Eastern RHA.

A private Funeral Service will be held at Sobering Funeral Chapel for invited close friends and family with interment to follow at the St. Mary Roman Catholic Cemetery, Beausejour, MB. Pallbearers will be stepdaughter, Jocelynne Durand, Tom Hay, Eddie Boyko, Bob Brown, Gord Unwin and Paul Moore.

Donations in Larry’s memory may be made to St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, Box 760, Beausejour, MB R0E 0C0 or Beausejour District Hospital - Special Equipment Fund, P.O. Box 1178, Beausejour, MB R0E 0C0.
