December 1, 1945 ~ May 3, 2019
It is with aching hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Margaret Elizabeth Wikjord (nee Tarr) May 3rd, 2019, at the age of 73, after a valiant struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.
She will be sadly missed by her husband Alfred; daughter Karla (Brian Scott) and grandchildren, Zander and Jordan of Courtenay, British Columbia; daughter Susan (Andrew Simpson) and grandchildren, Alaina, Erik and Hayden of Winnipeg, Manitoba; sister Kathryn (Wayne Barnes) of Burlington, Ontario; and sister Barbara (Dale Kendel) of Winnipeg Manitoba; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Marg was predeceased by her parents Alan and Dorothy (nee Ilsley) Tarr.
Marg was born in Winnipeg on December 1st, 1945, attended Vincent Massey Collegiate in Winnipeg and graduated from the University of Manitoba (B.Sc. Zoology 1967). She worked at the Marine Sciences Centre of McGill University (1967-68); married Alf in December 1968; lived in Strasbourg, France (1969-70); and moved to Pinawa in 1970 where she spent most of her 50 years of married life, except for three years in Las Vegas (1998-2001).
Marg was an integral part of the Pinawa community, in which she felt fortunate to live. She was creative in many ways. She built unique furniture, was a talented wood carver, and hooked many exquisite rugs. She was a passionate quilter and sewed quilts for her grandchildren and other family members. She loved her retreats to Fargo Quilt Shows with high school friends. She sewed tote bags for the Grandmothers-to Grandmothers Campaign of the Stephen Lewis Foundation. She helped with stage sets and props for theatre productions of the Pinawa Players and cherished many years of productions at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre. She was an avid player and keen instructor of the Duplicate Bridge Club. She enjoyed playing golf on Pinawa’s scenic 18-hole course and team bowling at the Lac du Bonnet Community Centre. She relished the quality time spent at the family cottage, a little patch of paradise on an island of Clearwater Bay, Lake of the Woods. Marg travelled extensively when she lived in Europe. Throughout her life, she visited many other interesting and exotic places around the world, including Japan, Thailand, India, New Zealand and her favourite, the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador.
Marg deeply loved and was very proud of her daughters and grandchildren. During her struggle with dementia, Alf was her lifeline and best friend. In the last few years of her life, Marg received and appreciated the love, care, support and companionship of many guardian angels, especially close friends and home caregivers.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 22, at 2:00 p.m. at the Sobering Funeral Chapel in Beausejour.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba or the Pinawa Foundation.
