Margaret Eschuk (Née Macmillan)

March 2, 1925 – December 24, 2020

Mum passed away peacefully in the wee hours of Christmas Eve with Luann by her side.

This is Mum’s story in her own words

I was born in West Kilbride, Scotland, the eldest of four children to Alexander and Janet MacMillan. My family moved to Paisley when I was 14.

I began work in 1940 at the famous Coats Thread Mills of Paisley. It was classed as essential war work, and I worked there for the duration of the war. In April 1942, I met the love of my life, Corporal Sam Eschuk, a tank driver for the Governor General’s Horse Guards. This would change my life.

We were married December 30, 1944 in Scotland. Sam was wounded in Italy and was sent back to England after months in hospital. He returned to Canada in 1945 and purchased a farm in the Anola area. After a six-week trek on the ship RMS Aquitania, I arrived in Anola six months later in April of 1946. There we farmed and raised our four children.

It was a busy and satisfying life, if not one that makes you rich! Once the children had grown, I worked for Home Care, and wrote a weekly column for the Carillon and Beaver (Clipper) papers.

In our retirement, we enjoyed many trips together to the U.K., the U.S., and across Canada. Spending time with our children, grandchildren, and many friends was a large part of our lives. Gardening, birdwatching, knitting, letter writing, and reading were hobbies of mine. Making new friends throughout my life was also very rewarding. The last four years, I lived with my daughter Luann where all my needs were lovingly taken care of.

I am survived by my daughters June (Jack) and Luann; sons Errol and Dale (Simone); grandchildren Stacey (Cindy), Kelly (Carina), Stephany, Jennifer, Shawn, and Christin; brother Billy; and great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. I was predeceased by my husband Sam, son-in-law Jim, sister Cathy, and brother Jim.

Thank you to the Ste. Ann Hospital nurses, health care aides, and Dr. Chloe Delaquis for their compassion, and the loving care they showed towards Mum. Special thanks to Kelly.

Give us the kindness to heal with compassion, to offer support, loving comfort and care. Give us the courage to do what is needed, the wisdom to choose what is right and most fair.
