Mark was born in Carman Manitoba and spent his early childhood under the loving care of his late grandparents Walter and Rose Toews. “Grandpa Walter” acted not only as Mark’s parent but also as his life long mentor who no doubt met him at Heaven’s Gate on February 1st.
Mark was trusted into the care of a family friend in Baker Lake, Nunavut at age 14 where he commenced his career as a construction worker and quickly moved up the ladder to become an efficient and precision equipment operator and truck driver. Mark’s ability, skill and quest for challenge provided him with many opportunities to use his wisdom and experience in a variety of environments including building and reclamation of oil rig sites in Alberta, fluid hauling through dangerous mountain terrain in British Columbia and ice road trucking in Northern Manitoba and Ontario.
Mark began to build a life with his partner Arlene Davidson on February 14, 1999 in Neepawa, Manitoba and the couple relocated to North Eastman in 2001. They purchased a home in the Seven Sisters Falls Hydro townsite in 2008. Mark was quickly embraced as a member of Arlene's family and was grateful for the love and acceptance he received from “Mama" Ethel Masiowski, brother Brad, sister Debbie and their families. He will also be remembered fondly by his nieces Jessica Graham and Jamie Graham Drader.
During times that Mark missed the comfort of his home, family and treasured pets, Mark took breaks from road work and picked up local employment with Ernie Wiebe Contractors, AML Concrete and the Manitoba Department of Transportation.
Mark was an intense and passionate man who was known as the guardian of the neighborhood as he was quick to offer his help to anyone who needed it. Mark spent much of his free time enjoying the nature and wildlife surrounding the townsite forest, and could often be seen on trails and back roads, proudly flying a huge Canadian flag that he mounted on a tall pole on the back of his quad.
Mark’s carpentry and construction skills allowed him to develop a beautiful yard and garden, and to make interior upgrades and modifications to the family home. In the summer months Mark enjoyed listening to an eclectic mix of tunes in the front yard where he welcomed neighbors and friends to join him and celebrate his love of life and sense of humor. His spirit will be felt there forever.
Mark’s most significant annual event was Remembrance Day, as he felt true gratitude to the Canadian heroes who sacrificed life and limb so we could enjoy the freedoms we have today. Mark was an enthusiastic supporter of Canada’s Freedom Convoy and participated in local activities to promote this important international movement.
Mark was laid to rest on February 11th at 11:11 a.m. surrounded by an intimate gathering of his most beloved friends and family. Mark’s love for Canada and his fight to restore and preserve our God given rights will continue to live on through those who shared his beliefs. Mark’s work here on earth has been completed but he will continue to serve as a proud member of God’s Army.
