1920 ~ 2014
Peacefully, on August 12, 2014 Mathilde Wulbern passed away at the age of 94.
She was born on June 20, 1920 in Würgassen, Germany. She was the fifth of seven children to Philipp and Maria Rox and enjoyed working in the family store. She met her future husband Hermann when he was stationed in Würgassen during WWII and came in to buy chocolates and tobacco. They were married in 1946 and immigrated to Canada in 1953 to start a new life and home in Winnipeg.
Her experience with customer service and mental math skills at her family’s store proved useful when she stepped in to assist her husband in his wood-working business in the 1960s as office manager, and later when she ran a drapery business out of the sewing room made for her by her husband. Mathilde and Hermann built their home on Harstone Road in 1959 in Charleswood where they raised their two daughters. Later, they also built and enjoyed a family cottage near Grand Beach. Together they hosted many parties where Mathilde’s lively nature was enjoyed by all. Mathilde loved to keep herself busy, and made the world more beautiful with each hobby – her wonderful garden in the summer, where she continuously tried to outsmart the deer and kanninchen (rabbits) from taking their share; countless sewing, knitting, crocheting and embroidery projects that will be cherished by her children and her grandchildren; as well as creating inspirational banners for Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. She will always be remembered for afternoon Kaffee und Kuchen and Sunday dinners with the family. She was blessed to have been an active part of her grandchildren’s lives.
Left to cherish her memory are her two daughters, Barbara (Chris Kiazyk) and Claudia (Mark Desjardins), her brother Josef, and many relatives in Germany and the USA. Oma will also be missed by grandchildren Philip (Kari), Catherine (Simon), Annette, Stephen Kiazyk; Andrew (Rachael) and Sabrina Lucarz; step-grandchildren Danielle (Shaun) and Darcy Desjardins; great-grandchildren Thomas, Jacob, Marcus, and Lukas. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Hermann in 1987, her infant son Hans Jürgen in 1952, and her siblings Philipp, Therese, Josefa, Hans, and Heti.
Special thanks to Brenda and Elsie and the other IRHA home care and palliative care workers that helped us keep our mother comfortable at home in Beausejour for the last months.
