It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Lorne Swanson. He passed away peacefully at the Whitemouth Personal Care Home on Tuesday, February 25, 2025.
He was recently predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Agnes Swanson.
He will be lovingly remembered and missed by his children; James Swanson (Kerri), Gary Swanson (Cheryl), Tim Swanson (Janice) and Lisa Gaffney.
By his grandchildren; Christopher Swanson (Tianna), Samuel Swanson (Melissa), Robert Swanson (Jill), Kevin Swanson (Alejandra), Matthew Swanson, Tracy Gamley (Ryan), Alison McDonald (Steve), Daniel Gaffney, Emily Gaffney and Lauren Gaffney (Dani), Taylor Cox (Sophie), Brandon Cox and Erin Cox. His great grandchildren; Wren Swanson and Caelan Gaffney. His sisters; Jeannine (Gordon) Cornell and Audette (Donald) Clunas.
Lorne was also predeceased by his second son, Bertram Swanson and son in law, Michael Gaffney. His parents; Milton and Martha Swanson and his sisters; Elaine (David) McMain and Gloria Swanson.
Lorne was born in Kipling, Saskatchewan on August 18, 1935. Lorne’s father’s career with Canadian National Railway soon moved the family to Fort Frances where Lorne attended school and met the love of his life, Agnes Egan.
They were married January 8, 1957. Lorne attended Ryerson College in Toronto and graduated in 1958 with his diploma in Metallurgy.
Agnes and Lorne lived in Churchill, Halifax and Pembroke, Ontario prior to settling in Pinawa in 1965. They made many lasting friendships in these locations.
In Pinawa, Lorne worked for AECL first as a technologist then later as a program manager.
Lorne spent many hours crafting furniture and renovating the house. He was an excellent carpenter, craftsman and could fix just about anything.
Lorne was also well known for his exceptional skills at the bridge table. He enjoyed and competed in many duplicate bridge evenings and tournaments.
Lorne was musical and played guitar, mandolin, and clarinet. He had a beautiful singing voice and enjoyed singing and all types of musical performances.
Lorne was a caring parent, catching baseballs, playing road hockey, building an above ground swimming pool and chauffeuring his children to activities that were not within walking distance.
Lorne was a proud resident of the LGD of Pinawa and was particularly proud to have served as a councillor and as mayor.
The family would like to extend our appreciation to the staff at Whitemouth Personal Care Home.
A funeral will be held Saturday, April 5, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at the Pinawa Lutheran Church. Interment at a later date.
