1918 ~ 2014
Paul Nazarko, aged 95 years, formerly of Hazelridge, MB, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 10, 2014 at Holy Family Personal Care Home in Winnipeg.
Paul Nazarko, was born on June 2, 1918 in the Glenella MB area to Adam and Ahafia Nazarko. He was predeceased by his son Lionel, his brothers Walter, Joe, Adam (Eddie), his sisters Mary, Anne (Burek) and his parents.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Yvonne (Keilback), his son Brian (Jan), Grant (Eileen), and his daughter in-law Neila (Rick), grandchildren Heidi, Soren, Anton, Orla (Glenn) , Bronagh (Tom), Nuala (Ryan), Niall, Gordon, 5 great grandchildren and his sister Polly Uskoski.
Paul will be remembered as the general merchant in Hazelridge from 1931 to 1981. Nazarko’s Store was known not only for its service and broad range of products but a good place for a chat. He was Post Master for 30 years, Shell Bulk dealer for 25 years, and he sold and repaired Lawn Boy power equipment and Pioneer Chain Saws.
Paul believed in customer service and in community building. He assisted in building the Legion Hall, the Curling Rink, the Hazelridge Arena, Scott Park as well as many fund raising events associated with community ventures. As part of his legacy, he believed that everyone needs to put more into their community than they take out. For his community work he received several awards including ‘Canada’s 125th Anniversary of Canada Confederation Medal’ in 1992 and the ‘Queen’s Jubilee Medal ‘ in 2013.
We are ever thankful for the care that Paul received this past year from the staff on St. Mary’s ward at Holy Family Personal Care Home.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on March 21 at Sobering Funeral Chapel, 1035 Park Avenue E., Beausejour.
