Pearl E. Habing (Nee Morfoot)

1928 ~ 2013

Peacefully and surrounded by her loving family, Pearl passed away at East Gate Lodge in Beausejour, MB on Thursday, February 28, 2013 at the age of 84 years.  

 Predeceased by her loving husband Leonard in 2005, granddaughter Eve Habing; daughter-in-law Helen Habing; both her father and mother, Thomas and Minnie Morfoot; father and mother-in-law, Fred and Elizabeth Habing; siblings Lorne Morfoot, Gordon Morfoot, Violet Irvine, Laura Lovallo and Jean Renwick. 

 Remaining to cherish her memory are her loving children: Lorne (Allison), Jim (Bernice), Jeff (Gail), Connie Chura (Norman), Nancy, and Brian. Grandchildren: Pamela, Brandi (John) and Becky (Jym); Trevor and Jared (Sarah); Courtney (Chris) and Justin; Evan and Joshua; and Cierra. Great-grandchildren: Tanner; Julian; Kaylin and Daniel. Her sister Marge Jacques, sister-in-law Mary Morfoot, and many extended family members and friends.

 Mom was born on March 29, 1928 in Beausejour, MB, one of five girls in a family of seven children.  She grew up there until she met the love of her life, Len and they were married October 11, 1947.  They lived in Libau, MB for a number of years while they started their family and later moved to the farm in the Eastdale/Cloverleaf area.  They raised their family on the farm, Mom being the homemaker and farm wife along with the local “school bus driver” for us and the neighborhood children.  She was an awesome seamstress and sewed many a bridesmaid dress and several wedding dresses as well as keeping all her children in top notch fashion mode.  She was a good sport in every way.  She was an excellent cook and teacher with some of her traditions being carried on today –  home made chicken noodle soup, chocolate cake, baking powder biscuits, and of course her bread making and cinnamon buns. 

 She enjoyed life on the farm, the peacefulness, her gardens and flowers and probably helped raise just about one of everything as far as animals go.  There was always time as well to accompany Dad on one of their many fishing trips or other travels to Whitehorse, Dawson Creek, Kamloops and even Mexico a couple of times.  She loved being around people and both her and Dad enjoyed the many family get togethers.  They also took every opportunity to do anything with and for their grandkids.  In her later years, Mom enjoyed partying at the farm now and again sitting in the sun or around the firepot with whoever showed up, and even took in the odd music festival – probably just so she could be fussed over.  She was a wonderful friend to all. 

 With compassion in her heart she started off working with Home Care and eventually came full circle at East Gate Lodge.  She worked there as a nurse’s aide, retired, then volunteered, and in the end lived her last couple of years there.  Utmost thanks and appreciation to the staff of Stony Plains and East Gate Lodge, many of whom remembered Mom for her time there.  All were caring and treated Mom with respect and dignity during her final days.

 Cremation has taken place and as Mom wished, no formal service is planned at this time.  There will be a gathering later on this summer at the farm.  A notice will be sent.  For those who wish to do so, donations in memory of Mom can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 10-120 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2.  Thank you.

 God saw you getting tired when a cure was not to be,

So He closed His arms around you and whispered, “Come to me.”

So when we saw you sleeping so peaceful and free from pain,

We could not wish you back to suffer that again.

It will be hard but we’ll be okay,

And we’ll miss you Mom, every day.
