It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Richard Fenez on Sunday, February 23, 2025 at Pinawa Hospital.
Richard leaves behind his beloved wife Judy (Thomas) of 53 years, his daughter Danielle Fenez-Mike Ross (Malin), daughter in-law Analyn Fenez, grandchildren Malayna, Grayson, Leighton, Hannah and Sofia. Siblings Louis (Noella), Aline, Denise, Linda (Alain), Norman (Yolande), and Joyce (Nigel).
Richard’s life was surrounded by many other loving family members beyond his immediate family. Many nieces, nephews, friends and relatives shared a large part of Richard’s life. The Jacobucci and the Wilton families had a special place in Richard’s heart.
Richard is predeceased by his son Dax Fenez, his parents Leopold and Leonie Fenez, in- laws Richard and Theresa Thomas.
Born in Pine Falls, Richard grew up in Powerview, Manitoba. Richard was a man with many skills. He began working at the Pine Falls Paper Mill in 1968. Within 5 years he began his machinist apprenticeship and was certified in 1977. Richard also earned his millwright certification in 1996.
Richard could fix or create anything. Whether building a home or a skateboard ramp for Dax and his friends, the end result was flawless. These talents impressed upon so many who were fortunate enough to spend time with him.
Richard had many interests. He was zealous about hockey and the Boston Bruins. Richard played locally for the Pine Falls Paper Kings and eventually, the Ol’ Kings. Richard was an avid outdoorsman. Hunting, fishing, cycling and cross-country skiing were all joyful pastimes. This wasn’t his identity, it’s who he was.
Richard devoted a large part of his life to making a difference and contributing to the community of Pine Falls. Richard spent 25 years as a volunteer firefighter for the Pine Falls Fire Department. He was also the union president at the paper mill. Richard was a passionate man and that wasn’t his identity, it’s who he was.
Richard coached youth sport in both hockey and ringette. This was influenced by his devotion to his own children, Danielle and Dax. Richard was selfless with his time and made anything he touched better. This wasn’t his identity, it’s who he was.
Nothing was ever taken for granted and Richard took pride in everything he did and accomplished, with passion. The lawn and flower beds in Silver Falls are bright, healthy and manicured to perfection. Every tree in the yard has its own circular bed making each one unique, just as Richard was. The yard is full of beautiful oak trees. The grass was not the place for their acorns. In the fall, none could be found.
His tools were organized to a fault with the sharpest blades and most accurate of tape measures and callipers. The term ‘good enough’ wasn’t part of Richard’s life. Do it properly and then learn to do it better. This wasn’t his identity, it’s who he was.
Richard’s children, wife and family were his pride and joy. Richard created an energy and environment that was uncontested, safe and unconditional. He brought joy and laughter to all who graced his presence. At Christmas, Richard would play the part of Santa. The family and children would gather by the fireplace as Richard handed out gifts and joy. This was important to him.
During the summer months, fishing and tubing on the Winnipeg River brought elation to Richard’s world. The kids and family would gather on the dock eagerly awaiting their turn to be pulled around by Grandpa. These are memories that we will all reminisce about eternally.
Even though Richard was quiet in thought, he was loud in his actions. Richard was a great man and will always be a mentor to many.
Richard’s downtime was spent sharing in the fruits of his labour along side his wife Judy. Richard and Judy spent many evenings sitting on the dock, simply listening to the falls and gazing at the sky. His fascination with the universe, the stars and constellations were often a topic of conversation and wonder.
The family extends its deepest gratitude to the wonderful team of devoted professionals at Pinawa Hospital where Richard spent his last weeks of life. The kitchen staff, nurses, health assistants and doctors were humbling with their sincere compassion and care. A special thank you to Dr. Michael Bruneau who not only treated his patient with expertise but also understood with kindness.
Richard, Rich, Richie, Dad, Grandpa, Uncle, you will be missed and cherished. Your presence, wisdom and patience will always be felt in our hearts. Be well on your new journey, the fishing must be better in Heaven and surely, as you always have, will speak wise words to those who are awaiting you, those who will follow and those who will always hear you.
