1947 ~ 2024
It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father, grandpa, brother, and friend Russell Thomas Reid, who passed away on February 11, 2024.
Left to mourn his loss are his wife Linda, children Angela (Bradley) and Matthew (Christina), grandchildren, Parker and Bella, sister Lynn (Wayne) and brother Geoff (Marsha), extended family members and cherished friends.
Russ Reid was born on April 14, 1947 in Brandon, Manitoba to parents William and Olive Reid. He was a natural athlete and enjoyed playing many sports with his friends. As a young boy, Russ developed a passion for baseball. He would go on to pitch for several elite teams and win a Canadian Junior Championship in 1967. In 2015, Russ and the Brandon Parklane Juniors would be recognized by and inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame. He was immensely proud of this achievement.
Russ had a love of learning that brought him to the University of Brandon where he played on the Bobcats basketball team. He would go on to earn a degree in Education and meet the love of his life, Linda. They married on July 9th, 1971. Together, they moved to Lynn Lake and taught for two years. In 1973, he accepted a position teaching History at Lac du Bonnet Senior School in Agassiz School Division (later Sunrise). During his 29 years at LdBSS, Mr. Reid coached multiple sports teams and helped the 1998 Varsity Boys Basketball team win a Provincial Championship. He continued to teach at LdBSS until his retirement in 2002.
No matter the weather, you could always see Russ walking. Without fail, he put on 8 to 10 miles a day. He worked tirelessly around the yard, never asking for help. He had a passionate love affair with stone wheat crackers, chocolate, chips, and ice cream. He loved travelling, taking many trips with Linda and later with his children. One of his greatest pleasures was attending his grandchildren’s activities. He spent a lot of time in hockey arenas and gymnasiums. He never missed a game.
Russ was highly active in the community. For 11 years, he and Linda were the Food Coordinators at the local Food Bank. For the last 9 years, Russ performed his duty as an elected School Trustee. Recently, he had been enjoying activities like floor curling with his friends at the Pioneer Club.
Russ was a big man with a big, loving heart. He was taken away from this world before we were ready to let him go. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Arrangements have been made with Sobering Funeral Chapel. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, March 8 at 11:00 am, at the Community Center in Lac du Bonnet. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
