Sandor Mate

August 26, 1937 — April 8, 2017

August 26, 1937 ~ April 8, 2017

Sandor died peacefully while under the watchful care of St. Boniface General Hospital staff, family and friends.

He was predeceased by his parents and many relatives back in Hungary as well as widowed by Magda (Nemedi) in 1984; Elizabeth (Tokes) in 1994 and Ana (Bodi) in 2014.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughters Kathleen and Judith; stepdaughter Susan; stepson Benci; grandchildren Colin and Matthew; many step-grandchildren; and his brother Erno and family in Hungary.

Sandor came to Canada during the Hungarian revolution and settled in Winnipeg in 1957.  He embraced the English language and embarked on many adventures during his first few years in his new homeland.  His experiences in college and the odd jobs he took on gave him fodder for many funny stories.

After working with a general contractor, Sandor chose to start his own company, Sandor Construction.  He worked hard for almost 30 years becoming very successful even while trying to juggle farming on a small piece of property in Beausejour, MB. Unfortunately, kidney failure forced him to retire in his mid 60’s.

Regardless of his hardships throughout his life; the amputation of his left leg and the loss of the love of his life Ana 2 ½ years ago, Sandor always maintained a jovial spirit and persevering attitude.  He had a sharp wit; strong opinions; great intelligence and a spectacular memory for quoting literature and poetry.

Sandor leaves behind memories of a character that his family and friends will remember for the rest of their lives.  He will be greatly missed.

Special appreciation is given to all the staff at the Poseidon Care Centre; the Dialysis Unit and 6th floor Medicine Unit at St. Boniface General Hospital.  Thank you all so much for your care and compassion towards such a dear man.

A memorial tea will take place on Sunday, April 30 at 11:00 a.m. at Qualico Family Centre in Assiniboine Park, 330 Assiniboine Park Drive, Winnipeg, MB.
