Sophie Dorothy Kiazyk

November 29, 1944 — January 21, 2021

November 29, 1944 ~ January 21, 2021

I was born on Nov 29, 1944, in Brockville, ON, the second oldest in a family of eight. My parents, Walter and Jean, gave me the name Sophie Dorothy. I had a happy childhood growing up just outside Winnipeg with my seven brothers and sisters, Mary-Anne (+ Joe), Stan (+ Rachelle), Orel (Wendy), Andrea (Karl), Christopher (Barb), Karen (Don) and Daniel (Kari). My parents made many sacrifices so I could receive a Catholic education at both Holy Ghost School and Immaculate Heart of Mary Academy.

My mental health challenges began in my teen years. That created many difficulties that followed me the rest of my life. At that time, mental health issues were poorly understood, and treatments were different than they would be today. I had always hoped to finish my schooling, get a job, and maybe even get married! Hope was always my best friend. As the years passed, my illness, along with where and how I lived, pushed those dreams farther from reality. Many doors and opportunities opened, only to be closed again along the way. However, the hand of God was always at work! My family was always there to support me in my dark times and help me through difficult living situations, be they in the institution in Selkirk, in group homes, or in lonely apartments.

By the Grace of God and His Providence, I was able to spend my remaining 8 years at East Gate Lodge in Beausejour. The understanding, care, and love I received there was wonderful. For me, it was Heaven on Earth! Even though my disability made it challenging, the staff and my family never gave up on me, and unfailingly provided the care I needed. I want to express my gratitude to them. I thank God and hope He blesses both the staff at East Gate, and my family for all the little things they did, working together to make life better for me. I look forward to being reunited with my parents and many other relatives and know I will be remembered by my siblings, nieces, nephews, and cousins just like I always remembered them. A celebration of my life will be held when conditions permit.

Donations can be made in my name to the East Gate Lodge Personal Care Home Recreation Department for the Rose Unit.
