With heavy hearts the family announces the passing of Stephen David Bahry on Monday, August 1, 2011.
Left to cherish his memory are his devoted wife Josephine (Regula); children Marilyn (David), Joanne (Randy), David (Cindy), Angela, Robert (Barbara); grandsons Geordie (Erin), Sean, Scott, Kyle, Kevin; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents Eva and David Bahry; mother and father-in-law Mary and John Regula; brothers James, Bill, John; sisters Marie, Anne, Nell, Sally; son-in-law Dallas Ward; and nephew Garry Mazur.
Dad was born on the family farm in the Sandhills of Brokenhead. He left as a teenager to find work harvesting in Saskatchewan and later as an accountant at Red Lake Mines in Ontario. Returning home, he obtained a teaching certificate and began a long and successful career teaching high school, initially at schools in the Beausejour area. He was involved in the community, sat on many committees, played baseball and curled. Over several summers he earned a degree in Economics from Bradley University, Peoria, Illinois, which qualified him to teach business courses at Tech Voc High School. Eventually he was appointed principal of the evening program, a responsibility he enjoyed because the position allowed him to meet so many interesting people.
Dad had an inquisitive mind, was well-read and knowledgeable in a myriad of areas. He was generous with his time, so many of us benefited from his counsel, not to mention his construction and mechanical skills.
He was happiest, though, when outdoors. Wandering the sandhills, picking blueberries and enjoying nature was a particular pleasure. He loved working in the garden and took pride in a neat yard. The family took a road trip every summer because he wanted to see new terrain. A memorable voyage was a trip to Hawaii where Dad was in awe of the lush jungle landscape.
Dad was always working on something-it wasn’t in his nature to be idle. He was self-reliant and determined. If something needed to be done, he did it, even if it meant devising a special tool or jig, or spending hours analyzing a problem situation. “It’s for the family” he always said. Well, the family will miss him. Rest in peace, Dad.
Sincere thanks to Dr. Dyck, Dr. Klippenstein and the wonderful staff on 5-U2 at Seven Oaks Hospital for the compassionate care they provided to the family.
Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m., Saturday August 6, 2011 at Sobering Funeral Chapel, Beausejour; Rt. Rev. Victor Lakusta officiating. Interment followed at the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Sandhill.
