Victor William Reschke

July 9, 1938 ~ August 19, 2014

It is with profound sadness we announce the death of Vic, beloved husband and lifelong companion of Lorna, on Tuesday, August 19, 2014 in Pinawa.

He is survived by his daughters Cheryl (Steve) Campanotto of Thunder Bay, and Shannon (David) Reschke-Derksen of Winnipeg; his grandchildren Rayna and Taran Campanotto, and David and Gabrielle Derksen.

He is also survived by sister Sylvia (Brian) Monka and their two daughters Deborah and Susan of Kelowna; brother Eric (Valerie) Reschke and their two sons Kevin and Colin, who are also his Godsons.

He will be sadly missed by sister in-law Ethel (Gerrard) Langlais of Rothesay, brother in-laws Arden (Ada) Campbell of Portage la Prairie, Dale (Rita) Campbell of Yorkton, Brian (Krysia) Campbell of Saskatoon, and Wayne Campbell of Saskatoon, seven nieces, and eight nephews.

He was predeceased by his loving wife Lorna (nee Campbell) in 2012.  He was also predeceased by his father William Reschke in 1977, his father in-law Douglas Campbell in 1987, his mother Rosalie Reschke in 2005, and mother in-law Lauretta Campbell in 2011.

As a young man he joined the Black Watch RHR, and was stationed in Sussex and Camp Gagetown, New Brunswick.  There he met and married Lorna, and they headed west on his release from the army.  He joined the Yorkton Fire Department in 1963, and moved his family to Manitoba in 1970 where he worked at AECL as a Protective Services Firefighter, Process Operator and Shift Supervisor in Whiteshell Reactor Operations until his retirement in September, 1993.

Yorkton was Vic’s “hometown”, and while raising his family there he gave much of his time back to the community, through the Junior Chamber of Commerce.  He gave Yorkton their first Tourist Information Booth, and their first Jaycee Santa Claus Parade, plus numerous other projects.

Vic was a hunter all his life.  Fall was his favorite time of year, and he felt at his best when he was tramping through the bush, whether it was in the backwoods of New Brunswick, prairie stubble of Saskatchewan or Manitoba, from the granite outcrops around Pinawa, to the southern and eastern shores of Lake Winnipeg.

Lorna accompanied him on many of his excursions, and these memories will be treasured forever.

Vic loved to travel, but hated to fly.  He made 21 trips across most of Canada and the Yukon by car.  The only provinces never visited were P.E.I. and Newfoundland.  He enjoyed their vacations in Hawaii, Vancouver Island, the Maritimes, the Caribbean, New Orleans, and several trips to Las Vegas.

Once grandchildren arrived, most vacations began to center around either visiting them and their parents, or having them visit in Pinawa.  These were the most precious, and most special moments of his life, for the grandchildren were his most valued gifts his children could ever have given him.

His vast knowledge of people; life’s requirements of him pertaining to his family, sense of responsibility in every position he held; and deep respect for those who earned it, made him the person that he was, admired and respected by all who knew him, loved and to be forever missed by his family.

We never really understand

At least until we’ve grown

The fullness of a parents love

The joys and cares they’ve known.

We do not see the special things

They do from day to day

And simply take them for granted

Their thoughtful, loving ways.

But as we grow, our wisdom grows

Until the moment when

We see how much their love has meant

How wonderful they’ve been.

And so this day we say to you

You were the best Dad in the world

And the very dearest, too.

No service by request.

Cremation has taken place, and a private burial will be held at a later date in Pinawa.
