Walter Robert Kintop

February 4, 1938 — August 20, 2024

Walter passed away peacefully at the Pinawa hospital.

He was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the eighth of nine siblings. He was baptized in the Greenwald school, which was used as a church on Sundays at the time. He grew up on his parents’ farm and attended the Greenwald school. He was confirmed in the St. John’s Lutheran church in Greenwald.

He worked on the farm and in the bush. At the age of 19, he worked at the Lynn Lake Mine as a cook for Canada Catering which gave him a life long proficiency in the kitchen. After this he did road construction for Schreyer Construction building the highway 59 (North) and later on the Winnipeg Floodway.

It was during this time he met Elizabeth (Betty) Rempel. They were married on September 23, 1961 in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Steinbach.

He left construction to go into mixed farming full time. In the early 60’s, Walter and Betty went into dairy farming and continued in dairy farming for 38 years. During this time, he served a number of years on the St. John’s Church council in Greenwald.

From early on, Walter had a great sense of humour. He and Betty were very hospitable when visitors arrived, and lunch and coffee were always offered. He enjoyed family gatherings – either hosting or attending. He also enjoyed being visited and interacting with the younger members of his family, especially the great grandchildren. Both Betty and Walter were prolific blueberry pickers often travelling as far as Bird River. He enjoyed their shopping trips south of the border to Grand Forks. They also travelled to Ontario and Prince Edward Island with Betty’s aunts accompanying them. Walter and Betty did a return trip to Lynn Lake to see the location again and visit people he had worked with in his younger days.

Walter is survived by his wife of nearly 63 years, Elizabeth; their daughter Christel; their sons Doug (Cathy), Colin (Tammy), Tim (Angie) and Matthew (Mandy). He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, Jonathon (Kelly), Jen (Chris), Curtis (Sarah), Brandon (Maggie), Trent (Lauren), Brooke (Zach), Amanda, Waylon (Padamay), Noah, Amy, Faith, Hayley, Madison, Chloe, Paisley and Presley. There are nine great grandchildren, Tayvian, Kendra, Karly, Klaire, Brynlee, Emerson, Ethan, Daxtyn and Bently. He is also survived by his sister Linda Beck; sisters-in-law Elsie Kintop, Anita Perry (Tom), Jeanette Rempel and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents Fred and Marie Kintop; his father and mother-in-law, David and Agatha Rempel; brothers William, Daniel, Emanual and Ronald; his sisters, Hilda Patzer, Natalie Schnellert, Alma Kintop; sister-in-law, Rosie Kintop, and brothers-in-law, Lenord Patzer, Roy Schnellert, Ervin Beck, Abe and Jake Rempel. His two nieces, Jacklyn Laliberte (Rempel) and Lisa Beck and nephew David Beck.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Stony Plains Terrace and the Pinawa Hospital for his ongoing care.
