Werner Bahde

May 2, 1933 — July 26, 2024

With heavy hearts, on July 26, 2024, we said goodbye to our beloved Werner Bahde. With his wife and children in attendance, he passed away peacefully at the age of 91.

Werner was born in Garstedt, Germany in 1933. As a boy, Werner lost his father, a drafted foot soldier on the Russian front. Werner grew up to become a machinist and joined the merchant marines as an assistant ship’s engineer in 1952. Over the next ten years he worked his way up to ship’s engineer and he travelled the oceans around the world making his living.

In 1958, Werner married his long-time sweetheart, Marianne Hein. Three years later, Werner settled into work closer to home. Then, in 1964, with their daughter, Christina, and their two sons Siegfried and Thorsten, Werner and Marianne emigrated to Canada. They travelled by ship from Rotterdam to Montreal, by train to Winnipeg and finally by car to a small farm just outside of Beausejour, Manitoba.

In the early years on the farm, Werner held jobs at CN and Shell Oil, whilst growing crops, keeping bees, raising pigs and chickens and cattle, to feed his growing family. Four more daughters, Carmen, Corina, Connie and Catherine, were born over the next six years. With his wife, Marianne, at his side, Werner worked very hard to feed his family and overcame many challenges to ensure that their children were prepared for success in this new country. Eventually, Werner and Marianne settled on dairy farming. Together, they continued milking cows and working the fields until 1993 when they retired. Over the next few years, Werner did odd jobs helping with the gravel pit next door to the farm. Werner then found his passion in gardening in 2010 and took great pleasure in tending his garden and sharing the fruits of his labours with his growing family up until his passing on July 26, 2024.

Werner always enjoyed being surrounded by his family and was at his happiest when his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren would visit. Werner was much loved and will be greatly missed.
