Wilma Hill

March 28, 1922 — March 28, 2014

1922 ~ 2014

Long time Virden resident Wilma Hill passed away peacefully at the Whitemouth Long Term Care Facility in Whitemouth, MB on April 12, 2014 at the age of 92.

Wilma was born on March 26th, 1922 to Olive and Newb Miller and grew up in Virden with her sister Gwen and brothers Layton and Bill.  A lover of animals, her childhood home was a constant menagerie of cats, dogs, rabbits and hamsters, along with birds and a pony.  During the war, Wilma worked for a time at the munitions factory in Toronto and at the Flying Training School just outside of Virden.

In 1949 Wilma married Melvin Carefoot and had sons Layton and Larry.  After Mel’s untimely passing in 1965, Wilma married Esmer Hill and moved to Esmer’s farm near the old Boss Hill School west of town.  Wilma and family enjoyed surrounding farming community, with evening and weekend get-togethers for dinners and card games.  Following their retirement Wilma and Esmer moved to Virden, eventually settling in an apartment in Kin-Place.  For many years they became “Snowbirds” and spent winters in southern Texas with their many retired friends from across the prairies.

Wilma stayed in Virden for a few years after Esmer’s death, and in 2010 moved to Eastern Manitoba to live closer to her sons.  She had been a resident of the Whitemouth care facility since November 2010 where she received excellent care and attention from the staff.  Wilma always had a friendly smile for visitors, and a “no complaints” attitude.  She will be lovingly missed by Layton and Larry and daughters-in-law Maureen Carefoot and Gail Carefoot and by her many friends and relatives.
